Pentagon sees progress, challenges in cyber warfare | Reuters

(Reuters) - The Pentagon says it is making progress in developing weapons for its newest battleground - cyberspace - but still faces funding, technology and policy challenges.

U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General Michael Basla, vice commander of Air Force Space Command, told industry officials on Monday the service was approaching its work on cyber capability as it would any other major weapons system.

"We have made measurable progress in defensive and offensive capabilities" in the past year, Basla said at a space conference.

He talked about teams of cyber "hunters" and listed several new programs - all part of the Pentagon's new drive to be more transparent about its work on cyber warfare and push back against daily attacks on its computer systems.

A watershed U.S. intelligence report in November said China and Russia are using cyber espionage to steal U.S. trade and technology secrets. Last week, the head of intelligence at U.S. Cyber Command described what he called an accelerating "global cyber arms race."

Familjerna till de pojkar som greps för misshandeln på Kortedala torg är starkt kritiska till de uttalanden Hjällboskolans rektor Peter Holmqvist gjort om pojkarna. Enligt de anhöriga är uttalanden helt felaktiga. Bland annat har han sagt sig om att pojkarna tros missbruka droger.

Ett 70-tal personer samlades på fredagen utanför skolans entré. Det var främst skolungdomar men även anhöriga till de misstänkta pojkarna var på plats.

En person hade tagit med sig en megafon och ropade: "Vill ni har kvar rektorn?" varpå folkmassan svarade "Nej!".

Air Force Kicks Off Search for 6th-Gen Fighter | Defense Tech

Check this out. Rounding out a week of bad news for what’s set to be the Air Force’s mainstay fighter for the coming decades, the F-35, Steve Trimble at Flight Global dug up the air service’s request for information on what might be an F-22 (and maybe an F-35) replacement.

The Air Force is interested in a plane, dubbed the Next Generation Tactical Aircraft, equipped with: “Enhanced capabilities in areas such as reach, persistence, survivability, net-centricity, situational awareness, human-system integration, and weapons effects,” a November 4, presolicitation noticestates. “It must be able to operate in the anti-access/area-denial environment that will exist in the 2030–2050 timeframe.”

Working on our short documentary series called OpenGov Champions I get to go and hang out with some extremely smart, creative and inspiring people. The Champions are ordinary citizens who do some extraordinary work to open up their local government data in big or small ways, not because someone asked them to, but because they are either fed up with not having access to information they need or simply because want their communities to flourish. To me, this is far more interesting as a storyteller and documentary filmmaker than interviewing seasoned politicians, spokespeople or experts. These are the kind of stories that are the fodder of classic storytelling and moviemaking. They are real life stories of the quintessential American heroes: Ones who defeat the odds by taking the matters into their own hands and create real change by strong will, passion and hard work.

Inside the Army’s Secret Cold War Ice Base | Defense Tech

No, this picture doesn’t show a black and white image of the rebel base on the ice planet Hoth. It’s part of a secret, nuclear-powered U.S. Army base that was built under the Greenland ice cap only 800 miles from the North Pole. The base was officially built to conduct scientific research but the real reason was apparently to test out the feasibility of burying nuclear missiles below the ice under an effort known as Project Iceworm. Remember, Greenland is way closer to Russia than the ICBM fields located in the continental U.S. Rumor has it that the Danish government had no idea that the U.S. was considering installing nuclear missiles on Greenland.

The 200-man base was massive , described by some as an underground city, and consisted of 21 steel-arch covered trenches; the longest of which was 1,100-feet long, 26-feet wide and 26-feet high. These tunnels contained numerous prefabricated buildings that were up to 76-feet long. The base was powered by a portable PM-2A nuclear reactor that produced two megawatts of power for the facility.

Want to see something cool? Watch the video below. As a tipster wrote us, “Your pic of Zumwalt being built is nice, but I have better.” We couldn’t agree more. The video below shows one of the USS Zuwalt’s massive hull sections leaving the Ultra Hall at Bath Iron Works in Maine and being fitted to several other pieces of the hull. The video gives you a great sense of just how big the 600-foot long Zumwalt class destroyers are. Remember, they’ll be the largest big gun ships to serve in the Navy since the retirement of the Iowa class battleships in the 1990s. At 1,400 tons, this ultra unit of the hull is the largest hull section ever moved at the shipyard.  These are going to be really cool to see in operations.

Nyhetsbyrån Reuters stämmer svenska staten för att ha överdebiterat Reuters för tillhandahållandet av information om den offentliga sektorn.

I stämningen med skadeståndsanspråk som lämnats till Justitiekanslern den 28 mars anger Reuters att Konjunkturinstitutet vid upprepade tillfällen överdebiterat Reuters för konjunkturprognoser som myndigheten tillhandahåller. Reuters anser att debiteringen är i strid med det så kallade PSI-direktivet, som är ett EU-direktiv.

Enligt Reuters har KI inte på ett korrekt sätt tillämpat PSI-direktivets bestämmelser trots att det infördes i Sverige i juli 2010. ”KIs avgifter ligger på en nivå som är avsevärt högre än deras rimliga kostnader”, skriver Reuters i skadeståndsanspråket.

China nabbing 'great deal' of U.S. military secrets | The Digital Home - CNET News

It's no secret the U.S. and China are waging a clandestine cyberwar. National Security Agency director Gen. Keith Alexander says it's hitting home hard.

Testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday, Gen. Alexander said that China is stealing a "great deal" of the U.S. military's intellectual property, adding that the NSA sees "thefts from defense industrial base companies." According to a story in Information Week, he declined to provide any information on those attacks. However, he did confirm speculation swirling around the security space that China was behind last year's attacks on RSA.
